About

I have worked full time between German and English since 2007, including in-house positions with an international business law firm and two technology companies, all based in Manhattan: My core areas are corporate communications and compliance, business, marketing, and technical translation.

My specialization is transcreation, the work that starts where translation stops. Slogans, headlines, taglines, brand voice, and campaign copy: the material where a faithful rendering is often the wrong answer, and where the job is to rebuild the effect rather than transfer the words.

I publish this work openly, on my site and on Instagram. My series Language Without A Manual takes a German source, my English version, and the thinking behind it; alongside it, I post side-by-side rebuilds of real published English I would sharpen. Clients tell me it is why they got in touch.

I grew up in Düsseldorf, lived in the UK for two years (a bumper sticker I still remember: "Get the South out of Yorkshire"), love the old York, but have lived and worked nowhere longer than in New York. That is the whole value proposition: I hear what the German is doing, and I know what an American or British reader will feel when they read it.

If a machine can translate it, you don't need me. If it has to land, that's the work I want.
